Headline data

Target name By 2030, improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally
Indicator name Proportion of domestic and industrial wastewater flow safely treated
Global / Proxy indicator Global indicator
Description of indicator This indicator refers to the ratio of discharged treated wastewater in total wastewater, excluding cooling water. The reason of the exclusion is that, although in greater amounts, cooling water has very low pollution burden and therefore doesn't need treatment before discharge. Data are compiled from all municipalities, villages, manufacturing industry establishments, thermal power plants, organized industrial zone directorates having completed their infrastructure, and mining establishments.
Unit %
Available disaggregation By province
Calculation Proportion of domestic wastewater safely treated (Households) = The total amount of discharged treated household wastewater / Total household wastewater * 100
Proportion of domestic wastewater safely treated (Industry)= The total amount of discharged treated industrial wastewater / Total amaount of industrialwastewater * 100
Comparability Comparable over time. Produced in full compliance with global metadata.

Sample coverage The data are compiled from municipalities, villages, manufacturing industry enterprises with 50 or more employees, thermal power plants with an installed capacity of 100 MW and above, organized industrial zones with completed infrastructure and mining enterprises that provide production information and request new licenses to the General Directorate of Mining Affairs.
Sample size The indicator is obtained by aggregating the data compiled from many different surveys. General information on wastewater can be accessed from the metadata of "Water and Wastewater Press Release, 2020": https://data.tuik.gov.tr/Bulten/Index?p=Water-and-Wastewater-Statistics-2020-37197
Interview method Data is compiled with a web based data entry application.
Reference period for application of survey The "previous calendar year" information is taken as reference in the period when the data is compiled and published. The reference period for the latest data year is January 1 - December 31 of the related year.
Field survey time and duration Field implementation starts as of February of the following year of the reference period. Field applications of different surveys are completed in different months.
