Sample coverage The sample design for the Research on Domestic Violence against Women in Turkey employed a weighted, stratified and multi-staged cluster sample approach. Sample selection in the Turkey Statistical Institution (TUIK) conducted with the cooperation and the sampling frame, block and block lists elections, where the selected households was provided by TurkStat.
The study sample is a cluster sample. In urban areas the cluster size is 32 households and in rural areas the cluster size is 24 households. 518 clusters were planned to be visited in order to reach the target number of 15,072 households. Among these clusters, 330 are urban and 188 are rural clusters. After the sample size was determined, blocks were formed and selected by TurkStat. At the first stage of sample selection, settlements in the strata were listed according to their geographic proximity and were separated into blocks of approximately 100 addresses. In rural clusters, block sizes differentiated according to the nature of the selected villages. Block sizes that were close to 100, block sizes requiring more than one village and block sizes that were more than 100 were observed. After this stage, blocks were selected systematically. With the systematic selection process, settlements were sampled proportionally to their sizes. In other words, more clusters were selected from larger settlements and consequently more households were visited in these areas. In the second stage of the sampling, 32 households for urban clusters and 24 households for rural clusters were selected systematically from the address block.
