This table provides metadata for the actual indicator available from Turkey statistics closest to the corresponding global SDG indicator. Please note that even when the global SDG indicator is fully available from Turkey statistics, this table should be consulted for information on national methodology and other Turkey-specific metadata information.
Target name | By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys have access to quality early childhood development, care and pre-primary education so that they are ready for primary education |
---|---|
Indicator name | Early child development index Proportion of children aged 3-4 years who are developmentally on track in at least three of the following domains; i) literacy-numeracy ii) physical iii) social-emotional iv) learning |
Global / Proxy indicator | Global indicator |
Description of indicator | This indicator refers to the percentage of children (36-59 months) who developmentally on track in literacy-numeracy, physical, social-emotional and learning. |
Unit | (%) |
Available disaggregation | Sex |
Calculation | The early childhood development index, which can be defined as the component of these 4 indicators refers to proportion of children (36-59 months) who are developmentally on track in at least three of these four domains divided by the total number of children aged 36-59 months in the population multiplied by 100. |
Comparability | This indicator has started to be produced as of 2018 TDHS. Produced in full compliance with global metadata |
Revision | - |
Other information | In the 2018 TDHS, a 10-item module was used to calculate the Early Child Development Index (ECDI). The primary purpose of the ECDI is to inform public policy regarding the developmental status of children in Turkey. The index is based on selected milestones that children are expected to achieve by ages 3 and 4 (36-59 months). The 10 items are used to determine if children are developmentally on track in four domains. |

Sample coverage | 2018 Turkey Demographic and Health Survey (TDHS) sample was designed with a multi-stage stratified cluster sampling approach. The sampling frame used for the 2018 TDHS used is "the National Address Databas" which is linked to support Address Based Poppulation Registration System (ABPRS). The first stage of the sample selection involved the selection of a pre-determined number of primary sampling units as blocks (i.e. clusters) out of the settlements selected in the 2018 TDHS was set at 754. Block level household lists each including approximately 100 households were provided by TurkStat. In the second stage a fixed number of households were selected from each cluster by systematic random sampling method using the updated household lists. Twenty-one households were selected per cluster. Total number of householda selected in 2018 TDHS is 15 775. All women at ages 15-49 who usually live in the selected households and/or were present in the household the night before the interview were regarded as eligible for the Woman's Questionnaire. Information about 36-59 months old children was obtained from interviewed women aged 15-49. If the woman has a child living 36-59 months old, information about early childhood development was obtained from the woman for each child in this age range. |
---|---|
Sample size | The number of eligible women interviewed is 7346. In 2018 TDHS, all children (1073 children) who were 3-4 years old at the time of the interview were investigated by asking their mothers. |
Interview method | Computer-assisted personal interview (CAPI) |
Reference period for application of survey | 5-year period before the research date |
Field survey time and duration | October 2018-February 2019 |
