Headline data

Target name By 2030, end hunger and ensure access by all people, in particular the poor and people in vulnerable situations, including infants, to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round
Indicator name Prevalence of moderate or severe food insecurity in the population, based on the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES)
Global / Proxy indicator Global indicator
Description of indicator The indicator measures the percentage of individuals experiencing moderate or severe food insecurity during the reference period. The severity of food insecurity, defined as a latent characteristic, is measured against the Food Insecurity Experience Scale global reference scale, a measurement standard established by the FAO through the application of the Food Insecurity Experience Scale in more than 140 countries worldwide since 2014.

Calculation Food Insecurity Survey and Rasch Model
• Data Collection: Food insecurity data is collected through responses to questions in a survey. These questions reflect experiences and conditions associated with different levels of food insecurity.
• Rasch Model (1-PL): This model calculates the probability of a participant answering ""yes"" to a specific question by considering the respondent's position and the difficulty level of the item. This model measures the severity of food insecurity for each respondent.
Weighting and Prevalence Calculations
• Transformation of Weights: If the survey is at the household level and household weights are provided, these weights are transformed to the individual level by multiplying them by the household size. These individual weights are then used to calculate the food insecurity rates for individuals.
• Adult Data: If the survey is conducted only on adults, the food insecurity rate for adults can be calculated. The overall food insecurity prevalence in the population is then calculated based on the proportion of children living in households where at least one adult is food insecure. Adult weights are divided by the number of adults in the household and then multiplied by the number of children in the household to obtain approximate child weights. The food insecurity rate for children is calculated using these child weights.
Comparability Comparable over time. Produced in full compliance with global metadata.

Other information Meaning of Weights: If weights are at the individual level, the prevalence of food insecurity represents the proportion of all individuals. If weights are at the household level, the prevalence is calculated at the household level.

Objective: The objective is to calculate the prevalence of food insecurity for individuals. Therefore, weighting at the individual level is important in calculations.
