Headline data

This table provides metadata for the actual indicator available from Turkey statistics closest to the corresponding global SDG indicator. Please note that even when the global SDG indicator is fully available from Turkey statistics, this table should be consulted for information on national methodology and other Turkey-specific metadata information.

Target name By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution
Indicator name Chlorophyll-a ratio of seas as a coastal eutrophication indicator
Global / Proxy indicator Proxy indicator
Description of indicator Nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients reaching the coastal and marine waters from different sources (such as wastewater, rivers, atmospheric inputs) cause an increase in phytoplankton in the light water column and phytopentos in the sea floor (especially on the coastal ground). Increases in the number and biomass of these creatures pose the problem of eutrophication. Chlorophyll-a, which is an indicator of phytoplankton biomass, performs photosynthesis, and this mechanism ensures primary organic matter production in the food cycle. Organic load and organic wastes, which are formed in the lighted layer and produced in connected productions, collapse deeper in the water column and cause the use of bacterial decomposition and the dissolution of water and oxygen required for life.

Calculation The indicator refers to the simple arithmetic mean of the measurement results.
Comparability Since it is a proxy indicator, it differs from global metadata in some way.
Revision -
Other information Chlorophyll-a is monitored during the winter and summer periods as part of the Integrated Pollution Monitoring Program in the Seas (DEN-İZ) carried out by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change in all of our seas. Limit values of Surface Water Quality Management Regulation are taken into consideration in the evaluations. This indicator will be published once every 3 years within the scope of Marine Pollution Statistics in the Official Statistics Programme.
